So, it is officially October! And of course, you know what that means - it’s spooky season! That’s right. Start the countdown to Halloween if you haven't already! However, October is the month of something else too, a challenge that lots of people who like to draw or consider themselves artists are participating in: Inktober
So, what is Inktober? Well, Inktober is a challenge created in 2009 by artist Jake Parker that occurs every October. You make 1 ink drawing every day for 31 days. However, you are allowed to use mediums other than ink. You can draw a sketch in pencil then outline with ink. You can draw with a regular ballpoint pen. You can draw with digital "ink". The list goes on and on. That being said, the purpose of this challenge is to draw every day for a month and grow and improve as an artist. There is no "right" way or method to do Inktober. Drawing digitally, for example, is not in any way "lesser" or "worse" than drawing traditionally and vice versa. At least, that’s what I think.
I personally am doing Inktober and so far it’s pretty fun! It’s my first time doing it. The prompts are pretty cool this year. What I really like about the prompts is that they are so simple, but at the same time, there is a lot of flexibility allowed in those prompts. People have lots of different ideas based on 1 single prompt, and it’s pretty interesting to see how other artists interpret it. Of course, you don’t have to follow the prompts for Inktober. You can choose to follow prompts from other similar challenges based off of Inktober such as Goretober, for instance. Or you can just choose to let your creative juices flow and just draw whatever comes to your mind. It’s really up to you. The point of Inktober is to develop your art skills, get out of your comfort zone, and maybe meet some other people who are doing the same thing. And honestly, I’d feel pretty proud of myself if I ever finish Inktober and actually draw something every day for 31 days. Who wouldn’t?
So if you are doing Inktober, that's great! Make sure to check out the Inktober thread on the YWP site and maybe post some of your amazing art! If you're not, aww, that's okay. Maybe next year. Of course, feel free to share your thoughts and your experience with Inktober and leave a reaction!
Nyx out.
