"Paradox," Maia announced.
Jimmy looked up in surprise. "What?"
"Paradox," Maia said. "Look, promise not to tell anyone about this?"
Jimmy considered this, then nodded. "I promise."
Maia sighed. "I found this book in Lolo's library. I've read all the books there, but I'd never seen it before. It was my mom's journal."
Jimmy nodded, pretending to listen.
"But here's the thing. Mama said that I was a child of paradoxes and possibilities. What would she mean by that?"
Now Jimmy was interested. "Wait, so you think this has anything to do with your missing brothers?"
Maia nodded slowly. "We were all there, but he only took my brothers. Why is that?" she wondered.
"Maybe... He couldn't." Ashley suggested, twirling her cinnamon colored hair.
Jimmy nodded and pushed up his glasses. "Interesting theory, Ashley. Why would you think that?"
Ashley shrugged. "You know, the way the mean kids from last year couldn't touch Maia? Magic."
Lukas rolled his eyes. "Magic again, Ashley? We all know it doesn't exist."
"Actually, it might." Maia said, absently going through the journal.
Jimmy, Ashley, and Lukas all turned to gawk.
"Wait, what?" they all exclaimed at the same time. "Maia, since when did you believe in magic?"
Maia sighed again. "Since I found this." She said, turning the journal to face them.
Everyone leaned over to look and gasped. In the middle of the page was a picture. Maia stood in the middle, bloody, but-
"Oh. Ok. So there's a picture of you blasting things that go bump in the night. It's just a painting. No big deal." Lukas said, desperately trying not to catch Maia's black eyes with his green ones.
Ashley didn't say anything, but it was clear from the way she raised her eyebrows that she didn't believe Lukas' theory.
Jimmy was just shocked. "Did your mom paint that?" he asked, looking at the signature.
Maia nodded. "Yeah, she did."
Ashley looked surprised. "Wait a sec. The picture looks like you exactly right now, but... Didn't your mom die giving birth to you?"
Maia nodded again. "So how would she know what I'd look like at 13?"
Lukas just opened and closed his mouth in disbelief. "Just- just some random coincidence. It probably doesn't even mean anything. Right?"
Jimmy reached over and closed his mouth. "Stop that. You look like a goldfish," he teased.
Ashley and Maia rolled their eyes. Boys.
"Back on topic." Ashley said. "From what her mom wrote, there's a prophecy. It might somehow tie in with her brothers' disappearance."
"But for some reason, they didn't take me." Maia continued. "Why?"
Everyone sighed. Every question just lead to some vague answer that brought up more questions.
Ashley suddenly flinched. "Maybe that manananggal outside the window will answer our questions?" She asked nervously with a gulp.
Everyone screamed and spun around, Lukas hoping a manananggal was something good, like..... Like... A kitten!
Sadly for everyone, a manananggal is a Filipino monster.
"Oh flip. What did we do this time?" Maia whispered.
Jimmy looked up in surprise. "What?"
"Paradox," Maia said. "Look, promise not to tell anyone about this?"
